Touch

Apart of the Earth
4in x 7in
“Hair deeply affects people, can transfigure or repulse them. Symbolic of life, hair bolts from our head. Like the earth, it can be harvested, but will rise again.”

This small piece is graphite on thick drawing paper, done with the use of thick linework and shading. Along the bottom is a section of earth and small plants that attach to a long, flowing head of hair. My work explores the idea mentioned by Ackerman that the hair is a life source just as the earth, and can be harvested just as the fruits of the land. The stylized drawing is meant to give a sense of serenity just as the section of work from Ackerman made me feel.

Touch of life
6in x 10in
“This is the first of three daily touch sessions for him - it may seem a shame to interrupt his thick, drug like sleep, but just by stroking him I am performing a life -giving act.”

This small piece is also done with graphite on thick drawing paper, utilizing thick linework and shading. The image of a girl being caressed by a hand is displayed, with the hand morphing into a strand of DNA. I wanted to represent the idea brought up by the author that the slightest touch is a "life-giving act". The empty eyes of the woman show that she is not yet fully completed, fully formed, and the touch is giving her the energy force that she needs.
